Not everyone has a bus-full of fans cheering them on. In fact, most people don’t have anyone rooting for them to succeed. Which is why I thought it was important to send you a little love and support through the internet today. Creativity is hard. Beginning something new is hard. Making change is hard. So whatever you happen to doing, working on, or striving for, believing in yourself is the best way to make it happen. And sometimes we need a literal reminder that we can do it.
To me, learning new things builds my confidence. So when I decided to try my hand at embroidery (encouraged by the lovely Lauren of Lark Rising), this was exactly what I set out to make. I read up on my materials, went to the store, lettered the simple design, and picked out the stitch I thought worked best. Then I made it. Without ever having embroidered anything before. And I did it. As I saw the script gradually appearing in pink thread under my fingertips, the act of creating this made me believe further in what it said.
Throwing myself in at the deep end always leaves me surprised, because like the tide, I rise to challenges. And I think most people do too. But if you don’t believe in yourself from the start, it can be scary to take that first step, to make that first stitch, or to try that new thing. But take a moment and read the message above. You can do it. And knowing that you can makes anything seem doable.
